Evidence 10: Video-Radio Project 2010 radio project link

Rationale 10: As part of the EDT661 Hardware and Systems class I visited a radio station with my collegues to get an understanding of what technology they use and how they make decisions about technology. Visiting a radio station was a great way to gain information about a venue that is really important to the middle school age students that I teach. Although my core subject to teach is math, I do spend a great deal of time trying to tap into the interests and strengths of my 8th grade students as a way to provide them with guidance into their future. Having the knowledge of the inner technological workings of a radio station helped me to encourage some of these students to seek opportunities in that area of study. Music is really important to most students this age and they were really interested in hearing about what I learned on this trip. Many students think of technology as simply computers and don’t realize the role that different technologies play in their community, specifically the radio stations that provide them with one of their most prized forms of entertainment.

As a teacher, taking this trip was a great way for to reach a part of the community that is meaningful for my students. It is pretty easy to get stuck in the physical walls of the school building and leave the educating inside. I have seen through this activity that my students respond well to connections in the community and are excited about it. Seeing this motivates me to seek out more ways to make that link to our local community.

10.K.2.: The teacher understands how factors in the students’ environment outside of school (e.g. family circumstances, community environments, health, and economic conditions) may influence students’ lives and learning.

In my experiences I have found that mst middle school students find music really important. Some find connections in lyrics, others simply enjoy the auditory stimulation, while still others find it as a way to communicate their own feelings. This experience was a way for me to tap into that outside interest and use it as a learning experience for my students.

10.S.2.:The teacher makes links with the learners’ other environments on behalf of students, by consulting with parents, counselors, teachers of other classes and activities within the schools, and professionals in other community agencies.

Taking whole classes on field trips is costly. When I found out that I would have the opportunity to go somewhere and learn about their technology I wanted to use a community resource that would be of interest of my students. This trip enabled me to gain information on technology and make the link between my students and a radio station that I know they would not be able to make themselves.

10.D.1.: The teacher values and appreciates all aspects of a child’s experience.

It can sometimes be difficult to get students interested in something academic when they are more concerned with their personal interests. Music is important to many of my students and I want them to be able to use that as a way to learn.
